Yes, Puts make money when the markets go down, but even then they often end up as losers.
Knowing how to buy puts involves a process with several parts:
- When do you buy puts?
- Which puts do you buy?
- How many puts do you buy?
- When do you sell them?
In a nutshell, understanding how to buy puts is a learned skill that requires a strong fundamental understanding of options, pattern recognition, and experience.

Maybe more interestingly, only 21.5% of all these hedges ended positive. This means that buying puts in these ETFs lost money 78.5% of the time if you held them until expiration.
