Trade Idea: ORCL $144.33 (Oracle Corp.)
Buy October 30th $160 Calls for $4.35
Sell October 23rd $160 Calls at $3.00
Oracle’s October 28th Investor Day is a major event because Wall Street is split on what Oracle’s AI boom ultimately means for the stock.
The Bull
The bullish view is simple: demand is exploding. OCI revenue grew 121%, GPU capacity is nearly fully utilized, Oracle continues signing enormous AI contracts, and management sounded extremely confident that growth will keep accelerating. If Oracle can show that this demand turns into strong earnings and cash flow, investors could view the company very differently.
The Bear
The bearish view is almost the exact opposite. Oracle is spending an enormous amount of money to build the data centers needed to support that growth. Free cash flow is currently negative, margins are under pressure, and management has not yet said exactly when that spending begins to produce substantial positive free cash flow. Bears worry Oracle may be building an incredibly expensive infrastructure business whose returns ultimately disappoint expectations.
Wall Street Expectations
That is why this Investor Day matters so much. Both sides agree the AI demand is real. The debate is over the economics. Wall Street wants Oracle to explain how big this business can become, how much more it must spend to get there, when free cash flow turns positive, and how large that cash flow can ultimately become. October 28 could go a long way toward resolving the debate.
The Trade
The stock traded near $170 a few weeks ago ahead of earnings. As the chart shows, it tested the 200-day moving average twice that week and failed to break through. Since then, the stock has pulled back and found support near $140, around the 50-day moving average. I suspect $170 will remain a key upside resistance level heading into the Investor Day.
Oracle is a polarizing stock right now, which is what makes this event so interesting. Management knows analysts and investors want clear answers. I have little doubt they will present an upbeat outlook. The more important question is whether Wall Street finds that outlook believable. That's what makes the October 28th Investor Day such a major potential catalyst for the stock.
I like the following trade:
Buy ORCL Oct 30th $160 Calls for $4.35
Sell ORCL Oct 23rd $160 Calls at $3.00
Net-debit = $1.35
The Target Stock Price range is around $160 prior to the meeting. With a positive response from analysts, $185 is possible with a breakout above $170.
