6 Ways Options Market Makers Make Money at Your Expense
A former options market maker explains the hidden costs retail traders miss, and why choosing the right strike price may be the most important decision of all.
Introduction
This is a very important article for you to understand. Not only will it help you "make" money by saving your costs, it will help prevent long-term losses.
The bottomline is that you cannot win with options if you don't understand the players you are up against. More to the point, you can't win if you don't understand how you lose!
The Invisible Cost
The largest Options Market Makers make a fortune off the billions of contracts traded annually. While this is widely accepted, it's not necessarily clear how they make their money, or how much they take from YOU.
Make no mistake, the Options Market Makers are feeding off your lack of understanding. They set "Traps" to take your money if you are going to walk right into them.
This is "The Invisible Cost" of trading options.
And unfortunately, it's a substantial amount.
How do I know this?
I was one of the top Options Market Makers working at one of the largest Investment Banks in the world.
My sole job was to make huge markets for the biggest Hedge Fund Managers and then manage the risk.
So, I too had a few tricks up my sleeve.
That You can learn.
More specifically, I'll show you how the options market makers maneuver underneath the surface and set sophisticated traps targeting millions of investors who are unaware of their tactics. Make no mistake, you are bleeding money ... without even knowing it.
How much money?
The degree to which you lose money depends on several factors, but it's safe to say most investors are losing thousands of dollars per year.
Whose fault is that?
You'll soon discover that in one case, the leakage is not your fault.
But most of the time, the options market makers are feeding off your lack of knowledge.
Put another way...

You're freely giving away your money.
And it adds up!
The options market makers are likely taking 2-5% of your total options premiums ("% Rake") over time simply because you're letting them. While that doesn't sound like much, consider this:
• The cost of 2 round-trip 1-lot (contracts) options trades per day with a $1.50 premium per contract and a 2% rake equals $3,000 per year.
• Many investors are making 5 to 20 trades per day, which can drive the annual cost much higher toward $7,500 - $30,000.
And that doesn't include a few big mistakes you might make along the way.
In fact, it's very possible that you paid the options market makers $10,000 even though your $10,000 account had no profits or losses for the year.
Here's the Formula
= Days per week x 50 x (# of Trades Per Day) x Lot Size x Multiplier x Avg. Options Premium x % Rake
= 5 days per week x 50 x (4 trades) x 1 lot x 100 multiplier x $1.50 premium x 2% rake
= $3,000 per year
• Instead of round-trip trades we used the # of trades you do per day. Whether you buy or sell, it counts as 1 trade.
• Obviously, the more lots (i.e. Contracts) you trade the greater the size of the trade. 1 lot, or 1 contract, is just the minimum. Change "1 lot" to fit your average lot size.
• The average Options Premium size affects the total size of the trade. So, if you are trading 1 lot of TSLA options that is a lot bigger than a 1 lot of AMC options. I can't say it enough, the more money you are moving around, the more money that is leaking out.
• Finally, the "% Rake" depends on your style of trading and the strategies you employ. Again, that rake will likely average between 2-5% over the course of a year.

How Much Money Do You Give
Away Over the Course of 1Year?
This is only an estimate.
Crazy, right?!
What should strike a nerve is that you didn't know the extent of this until I just told you.
But your eyes are opened now.
Welcome to the game. The only question is...
Are you going to fight back or continue to give away your money?
This is trading, not some charity poker tournament.
You trade to win.
And I want to help.
Look, the easiest way for me to make you money with options is to simply show you the traps you MUST avoid.
And let’s be clear, saving $3,000 is the same thing as making $3,000.

#1. ITM Options

Options market makers profit handsomely with ITM options. Incredibly, most investors don’t even know how much they give away.
If you are an options buyer, then selling ITM options is usually a positive experience because it means that you’re likely making money. And when people make money, they tend to be looser with their trading. Suddenly, it's easier to give away $50 when closing a profitable trade because... "Hey, you're making money!"
On the flip side, if you’re an options seller and the option goes ITM, then it’s likely that the trade went against you. Fear might sink in and the “Just get me out!” mentality takes over. During these times, price becomes less important than quickly closing the position.
Both emotional states distract you from the focus of getting the right price. Not only is that important, but it can also be difficult to do with ITM options.
ITM options usually have wider bid-offers than other options. This often makes it frustrating to exit the trade, especially when they are excessively wide. During these moments, knowing the right price becomes critical. Why?
If you trade at the wrong price, then you’re giving away free money to an options market-maker. You want to avoid that unless giving away free money interests you. If it does, then I would suggest you learn how to trade at the right price and donate the saved money to your favorite charity.
Remember, every extra penny you save in your execution is greater profits in your pocket. For example, saving $0.10 on a 10-lot makes you an extra $100.00. Now, think about how many options contracts you trade each year.
Ya, exactly!
Those $0.10 add up quickly.
If you trade 100 ITM contracts over the course of a year and lose $0.10 per trade, it amounts to $1,000 of free giveaways. 1,000 ITM contracts adds up to $10,000 that you could have saved.
And you wonder how options market makers make $Billions per year?
Most investors are unknowingly giving away their money for free.
Stop doing that!
